This low carb paleo slaw is diabetes friendly. My favorite kind of foods!!
- ‘real food’ ingredients, avoid using store-bought mayonnaise
- tomatoes and cabbage have carbs, so use this as a side dish
As delicious as this is, you may be tempted to just eat a big bowl of this slaw. Do not. While this dish is ‘low carb paleo’, it’s not ‘all you can eat’. Eat this as a side only, use restraint.
This post was originally going to be about an entire meal but the pictures of the PRIMAL Slaw were so appealing … that I decided to make this a one item post.
Low Carb Paleo SLAW!
I eat this so rarely, it truly is special treat. Because I only eat 10-15 grams of total carbohydrates most days, this side dish tastes like a dessert to me!
It tastes so sweet!
Given the changes in my meal plan (low carb paleo) … vegetables that are moderately high in carbs (relatively) … taste sweet to me. It may be difficult for someone on the Standard American Diet (SAD) to understand … but with cabbage and tomatoes combined… this ‘dish’ truly does taste sweet… almost like a dessert. :))
How to Make Low Carb Paleo Slaw
The ingredients can vary based on your favorite veggies but this post will show how I make mine. The main ingredients are cabbage, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Slap Ya Mama! and Louisiana Hot Sauce.
Notes:
This slaw was so BEAUTIFUL, I had to take more pictures than I intended…AND the family loved it. I love HOT, SPICY foods … if you do not, then I suggest you take that in consideration.
I make this in advance and place in the refrigerator to cool. I like my slaw cool, makes a nice contrast with the hot/warm meats. Plus, making this in advance reduces some of the stress during meal prep… especially since I usually only eat a meat with the slaw. :)
Steps
1) Chop Up desired amount of Cabbage – usually chop up one head at a time.
2) Slice and Dice Vegetables – this time I only added tomato (two small tomatoes)… in times past I’ve added onions, green peppers … explore and experiment… see what YOU like best. :)
3) Add the rest of the ingredients… to taste. And stir/mix VERY WELL. :)
Below are the amounts I added.
– 4 TBS of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVO)
– 4 TBS of Apple Cider Vinegar …. I love this stuff. Has many uses…. in and out of the kitchen.
– 4 Caps of Louisiana Hot Sauce
and Black Pepper to taste. – this is where I erred… I added too much black pepper. It was fine for me and my son… but “The Wife” did not like it.
4) Remove from the refrigerator …. and add to freshly prepared MEAT!!! … in this case Bacon Braised Salmon!!
Low Carb Paleo Slaw is Diabetes Friendly
Hope you enjoy this side dish … its’ a favorite of mine and goes well with many meats… fish, burgers, steak and chicken.
Something about the cabbage and EVOO with the vinegar and tomato combined, makes this seem so sweet!! I LOVE IT!
Depending on your cabbage and tomato this slaw can have approximately 5-7 grams of carbohydrates per cup. I probably had about two cups with this meal … I had seconds. :)
Point being… AS ALWAYS, KNOW what you are eating and how it will affect YOUR blood sugar.
Reduce Your Blood Sugar the Warrior Way
Below is my personal ‘diabetes care’ manual. It is truly diabetes friendly, not Big Food, Big Pharma and Medical Industry friendly. Every person who follows my plan improves blood sugar control. Not coincidentally, each person who follows my diabetes care plan reduces the profits of Big Food, Big Pharma and the Medical Industry.
This looks awesome! I love cole slaw but restaurants usually put sugar in it (though mom makes it for me with Splenda :)) Looking forward to trying this one.
Thanks!… and let me know how you like it! :)
